From November 3 to 4, 2024, the Africa Regional Meeting on Mercury and E-Waste Pollution Management brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The Artisanal Gold Council (AGC) was privileged to contribute to this landmark event, sharing insights and showcasing impactful solutions in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM).

A Collaborative Opening

The conference began with an opening ceremony led by the Chief of Staff of Tanzania’s Vice President. Presentations highlighted the pressing mercury issues in ASGM and the efforts being made by participating countries to eliminate mercury use. On the second day, organizations like Pact, The Impact Facility, and the NRDC joined AGC in sharing strategies and initiatives, including highlights from the planetGOLD project.

Showcasing Solutions at the Exhibition

AGC played a key role in the exhibition, presenting achievements from the planetGOLD Burkina Faso project. Highlights included:

  • Mercury-Free Processing Technology: AGC showcased training programs and the results achieved in mercury-free gold processing. Visitors explored the sustainability and accessibility of gravimetric technologies and their potential impact on ASGM.
  • Gold Kacha Concentrators: AGC highlighted the successful application of Gold Kacha concentrators in the FCIL project, with special attention to how this equipment has empowered women miners.
  • Interactive Learning: Delegates and visitors engaged with practical demonstrations and gained insights into the application of cleaner, safer technologies.

AGC’s contributions stood out, fostering meaningful dialogues and sparking interest in mercury-free alternatives.

Strengthening Networks and Opportunities

The meeting was not only an opportunity to share AGC’s expertise but also a platform for strategic networking. Contacts were established with representatives from key organizations, including the World Bank and other potential donors. These connections will support efforts to secure funding and expand AGC’s impact across Africa.

About the Africa Environmental Health and Pollution Management Program

The Africa Environmental Health and Pollution Management Program spans Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania, and Zambia, aiming to reduce mercury and uPOPs (unintentional persistent organic pollutants) exposure while strengthening institutional capacities. The program is structured around four key components:

  1. Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building: Enhancing knowledge and capacity to address health risks from mercury and uPOPs in ASGM and e-waste sectors.
  2. Policy Dialogue and Regulatory Support: Assisting governments in policy enhancements to mitigate chemical exposure risks.
  3. Technology and Economic Demonstrations: Financing and applying cleaner technologies in contaminated sites.
  4. Project Coordination and Management: Ensuring effective implementation and monitoring across national and local levels.

Looking Ahead

AGC’s participation in this pivotal regional meeting underscores its commitment to advancing sustainable solutions in ASGM. The dialogue and collaborations forged in Dar es Salaam mark a significant step forward in achieving a mercury-free future while promoting safer, more equitable practices for miners worldwide.

AGC looks forward to continuing its contributions to the Africa Environmental Health and Pollution Management Program and collaborating with partners to drive innovation and impact across the region.
